What I’ve learned is that a seemingly random Tuesday can be nothing but pleasurable when staying at such a place as Skyview Motel. Beginning with the view of the sign from the south-bound Highway 101, to the short skip up the sloping driveway, to the poolside moments with a twist. It took a few minutes of wandering to find our place physically, which allowed me to be left me wondering where to begin in my writing journey. Although I’ve spent many years traveling, I’ve never thought much to write about it. I carry with me my experiences around the world in my memories, as does everyone I suppose.
This one experience was both quaint and nostalgic. A theme I’ve heard quite a bit these days is the idea of sustainable building. Meaning, taking the old trucker motel on the side of the road and turning it into a mid-century modern oasis. Being someone with perfectionist tendencies, I was instantly pleased with the crisp sheets tucked away in our room, and the vineyard view we had looking out of our room was simply astonishing. I enjoyed the landscape of highway and hills, parted only by the rows of vines waiting to be turned into the crisp rosé Skyview has to offer. If given the opportunity I would have spent hours there, just observing an admittedly amusing view of cars on a highway while I donned a striped swim suit.
Skyview Motel was established in 1959 as a trucker motel. The turn from an overnight pit stop to a 33-room boutique hotel has only done it favors. The pink cacti which fill the spaces are reminiscent of the pink flamingoes of America’s era of explosive consumerism and enjoyment of frivolities.
The order of events which I took began with a stroll around the property followed by a refreshing dip in the pool. We took a sunset stroll along the edge of the vineyard; meandering through the rows as discreetly as we could. We dined at Norman, the restaurant located on the property, delighting in the rosé infused chèvre paired with edible flowers and mint atop crostini. The photographer featured on this blog captured the special instances and moments we shared throughout the sweetest of "staycations" we were exceptionally pleased with.
The next day was a quiet but well-rested return to reality, and only left me wondering more about the small wine country we hadn’t had enough time to enjoy. That being said, Skyview has left an impression in my mind, and will be a must stop the next time I find myself along that stretch of Highway 101.
